The
Mo Ibrahim Foundation has approved a grant of $12, 980 for the establishment
of a media and governance module under the Journalism
and Media Department of the African University College of Communications
(AUCC).
The purpose of the grant is to support AUCC to monitor media in Ghana and
the wider West African Region comprehensively and regularly on issues related
to good governance.
The grant
will also help AUCC to become a centre for research and training
in governance-related aspects of communications and development in
Africa and assist the university to increase awareness amongst its
students on the role that media plays in governance.
Whilst taking this opportunity to congratulate Ghana for being ranked
seventh in the Mo Ibrahim Index for African Governance, the President
of AUCC, Mr. Kojo Yankah stated that this partnership between AUCC and
Mo Ibrahim Foundation was a unique one which would ultimately assist
Ghana and the whole of West Africa to attain MDG 8 - the expansion of
global partnerships for development.
Mr. Yankah
also stated that this partnership was in accord with AUCC‘s
vision to become Africa’s best center for journalism, communication,
IT and business management to assist in the rapid growth and development
of the Continent.
As indicated in the MOU signed by the two parties, the Grant will
assist AUCC to produce skilled and knowledgeable information
and communication professionals to help Africa integrate and
gain the benefits of the global information age.
Mr. Kojo
Yankah signed the MOU on behalf of AUCC while Mr. Hadeel Ibrahim,
Executive Director, signed for Mo Ibrahim Foundation. AUCC has been
ranked as a potential centre for excellence in media education in
Africa. Affiliated to the University of Ghana, AUCC offers degree
and diploma programmes in Communication Studies and a BSc degree programme
in Business Administration.
