Six former and current students of the African University College of Communications (AUCC) once again made the university college proud by winning top recognition at the just ended 25th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards held on Saturday October 24, 2020 at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.

The event saw some alumni and students of AUCC picking coveted awards on the night including TV3’s news anchor Portia Gabor (Formally Portia Solomon) winning  the Best Reporting in Science (Electronic) and Special Award for Covid-19 Coverage. Afia Tamakloe of Adom TV won the accolade for Best Health Reporting, Gabriel Ahiabor of Daily Graphic was the winner for Arts and Entertainment Reporting and Beatrice Senadju (GTV) won Development Journalism for furthering SDGs. Ama Sarpong Kumankuma (UTV) and Joseph Armstrong (TV3) were recipients of the Special Award for Covid-19 Coverage. Ghanaian Times reporter, John Vigah took home the enviable Best Sports Reporter (Print) award. They have all been trending on social media since the announcement.

The Corporate Communications Officer, AUCC, Mr. Benjamin Osei Boateng said in an interview after the event that the university college was interested not only in the churning out of students but also goes the extra mile to track the contributions they make to society. “It is against this background that the Corporate Communications Office has introduced a system dubbed “AUCC Star” to acknowledge and celebrate outstanding alumni and students by sharing their success stories with the world through our various social media platforms. This is to invigorate efforts at mobilizing the over 3,000 alumni to support the new vision of the college”.

The 25th GJA Awards was on the theme, “COVID-19 and credible presidential and parliamentary elections: The media factor”. 

The GJA Awards provides a platform to recognize individuals and companies that play a significant role in the growth and development of the industry while recognizing the key functions within the industry that promote growth and sustainability. The awards cut across Broadcast Journalism, Business and Financial Reporting, Environmental Journalism, Feature and Magazine Writing, Global and International
