The African University College
of Communications(AUCC) in collaboration with Ghana Telecom University
College & Penplusbytes (The International Institution for ICT Journalism),
has organized an international symposium on communication, new media
and development at the Discovery House Campus of AUCC at Adabraka, Accra.
Ninety (90) participants from the
civil service, universities and media organizations in Ghana attended
the two- day symposium which began on 4th June 2009 and ended on 5th
June 2009. The theme for the symposium was “Assessing the contribution
of communication and new media to human development in Africa.”
The special guest of honour for
the programme, Hon. Haruna Iddrissu, Ghana’s Minister of Communications,
stated in his address that the current information society had the capacity
to reduce many traditional obstacles in education, increase productivity
and generally generate economic growth in Africa. He stated that the
onus was on communicators to take advantage of new media to get the
right messages delivered to all segments of the society. He however
cautioned communicators not to misused technology to spread negative
content.
The keynote speaker for the symposium, Africa’s distinguished
communications scholar from Benin, Prof. Alfred Opubor, presented a
paper on the topic “The Communication for Development and the
Development of Communication Debate: What relevance for Human Development
in Africa?” .
